A drink-driver headed for a bus stop after his car ended up in ditch on his way home from work.

Dayrl Rowe, of Llandissilio, Clynderwen, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit when he appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates on Tuesday, October 9.

Sian Vaughan, prosecuting, said police received a report that a suspected drink-driver was trying to leave the scene of an accident on the A4075, at 9.15pm on September 24.

The court heard that Rowe had driven after failing to get a lift home from work, and his Toyota Rav 4 ended up in a ditch at Canaston Bridge.

Officers found him standing at a nearby bus stop.

Miss Vaughan said: “He was clearly intoxicated and provided a positive roadside breath-test sample.”

Rowe, 47, was found to have 93mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit is 35mg.

Katy Hanson, defending, said Rowe, a former nurse who was working as a waiter, had run out of his anti-depressant medication at the time of the offence.

“He accepts he had something to drink during the course of his shift and got into the car to drive home.

“He is extremely sorry for what happened on this occasion. This is not something that would be usual for him.

“He is devastated and very ashamed to be before the court today. The loss of his licence will mean that this job will no longer be available for him.”

The bench heard that the pressures of Rowe’s 25-year career had left him with anxiety and depression, and he had turned to alcohol when ‘everything got on top of him’.

Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order with a 20 day rehabilitation activity requirement and a £120 fine.

He was banned from driving for 24 months and ordered to pay £85 costs plus an £85 surcharge.
