Wedding cake is usually made to be cut not caught, but not if an Ammanford cake maker has anything to do with it.

Earlier this year Kay Augustus, from Myddynfych, was approached by researchers to create a wedding cake for a circus-themed wedding as part of a children’s television show after being found on the Food Government website.

Marrying Mum and Dad is a CBBC television series which lets the children plan their parents’ wedding.

In this insistence, Kay was handed a brief by children Kai and Paige to create a cake which can be juggled for their mum Kia and her wife-to-be Kate’s wedding at Perriswood Falconry in Gower.

“The brief was fun and something I hadn’t done before,” said Kay, owner of Augustus Gloop Cakes.

“I made around 80 balls which were then juggled and caught by guests at the wedding.

“Making them didn’t take long but ensuring they didn’t fall apart took a bit of time as I had to dump them in Candy Melt.

“My daughter Cerys who loves the show helped me with the inspiration and both my children were invited along with me to the filming of the show and we all had a lovely day.”

Kay’s cake creativity first began when she started making birthday cakes for her two children and over the years the requests have become more adventurous.

The businesswoman was recognised for her wedding cake design at the Cake International competition in Birmingham last year where she walked away with a silver award after impressing judges with her Disney-themed design.

“I pride myself in making wedding cakes which are sometimes pretty and other times pretty crazy,” said the mother-of-two.

“I have never made the same cake twice and I believe that your wedding cake should represent your personality and should be something your guests talk about for years to come.”

Kay and Cerys both walked away with a silver award after impressing judges at the Cake International competition last year and the duo are hoping to scoop the top prize at this year’s event.

You can catch Kay’s cake on Marrying Mum and Dad on CBBC at 5.30pm on Friday, September 21 or visit BBC iPlayer.
