Ammanford is to honour its fallen at 11am on Remembrance Sunday following a u-turn by the town council.

Last week’s Guardian reported how councillors had voted to keep the service at 2pm following a plea from the Ammanford branch of the Royal British Legion asking members to maintain the town’s tradition.

However, a special meeting was held on Monday after councillors claimed they had voted without being fully informed.

The latest meeting called for the vote to be rescinded and put forward a proposal to hold the service at 11am in line with the rest of the UK.

Before the vote, Mayor Jonathan Davies said he felt the council’s initial decision had been unduly influenced by the request from the Ammanford Branch of the Royal British Legion.

Cllr Davies said: “Before we take this vote, we need to remember that we are here to represent the people of Ammanford.

“It has been a difficult week, but we have always morally and financially supported the Royal British Legion.

“They have informed me that they will support us, but the council is responsible to mark November 11 in Ammanford.”

Following a unanimous vote, the Remembrance Day service will now be at 11am at Ammanford Park memorial gates.

The u-turn has been welcomed by local veterans who were left disappointed by the original decision.
