An Ammanford-based friendship group has marked their existence by creating a piece of art.

The Growing Together Group began in Pantyffynnon with a number of people who loved plants and gardens and later developed a garden at the rear of Parcyrun School.

The group expanded under the Welsh Assembly initiative Communities First, and the first Chairperson was Mrs Nancy Jones.

As a group that has been running since 2006, the current interests range from visits to interesting places including gardens and talks, that are both entertaining and educational.

Chairperson Antonia Rees-Evans said: “Over the years, members have taken up various interests as a result of some of the demonstrations such as indoor bowls, nordic walking, walking hockey, plant propagation, flower arranging and many more.

“The most important of all though are the many new friendships and support networks that have been formed. We are now growing the community rather than plants.”

The 10th year anniversary of the group has been commemorated with a mosaic by Art4Space which has been placed on the wall at Ammanford Pensioners Hall.

The mosaic was designed and created by artist Dani Lee alongside members of the Growing Together Group.

Dani, who creates mosaic and cob murals with community groups and schools, said: “The artwork shows some of the activities that the group gets up to including castle visits, garden walks and lots of cups of tea.

“The tree and its seedling represent the growth of strong friendships within the group.

“There was active participation from the Group who contributed ideas, meaningful artefacts to include and actually did some hands-on work and learnt some new skills along the way.”

The mosaic was unveiled by the Ammanford Mayor Councillor Colin Evans in the presence of Councillor Carol Cadman, who is a founder member of the group.

Speaking at the launch, Cllr Evans said: “I would like to thank the Chairperson and Cllr Carol Cadman for the kind invitation.

“I have been Mayor on three separate occasions and this is the first time I have been asked to unveil something.

“The mosaic is excellent and really sums up with the Growing Together Group is all about.”
