AMMANFORD youngsters have been doing work experience across the area to pay for a trip of a lifetime.

Players at Ammanford AFC’s under 14 team have been volunteering at businesses in the town in exchange for funding.

The team is heading to Barcelona in April for a tournament where they will take on teams from Brazil, Portugal, Italy and Spain.

Coach, Carl Morgan came up with the idea of asking local businesses to contribute to the team’s travel in exchange for doing work.

He said: “I try very hard to instil a sense of hard work and respect in the boys.

“We went on a trip to Woolacombe in my first year with the team in 2016, then last year I decided to have a look at competitions abroad which is where we saw this Barcelona trip.

“It came to around £500 for each lad, and we wanted them to go for free ideally.

“So, we came up with this idea.”

Players are taking time out to volunteer at a number of local businesses, who in return are being asked to donate some money to get the team to Barcelona.

Mr Morgan added: “It is about showing the boys they get out what they put in.

“After the work the businesses give what they think the boys work was worth.

“We’ve got lads stacking shelves in Nisa in Gorslas.

“We have got groups doing litter picks at the sporting facilities we use as a thank you to a contribution from Ammanford Town Council. They’re doing all sorts.

“If people do sponsor us, they are not forgotten about.

“After the trip we are going to have a presentation dinner which all the people who contributed will be invited to.”

The team raised £4,000 over the summer when they sold raffle tickets and prizes at their own tournament.

The target is £10,000, which will cover the flights, board and coach for the players. So far, they have raised around £8,000.
