VIP visitor Eluned Morgan AM was given a ‘grey-t’ welcome when she met hounds and humans at a dog rehoming centre.

The Mid and West Wales AM visited Greyhound Rescue Wales’ Hillcrest centre near Ammanford, after initially meeting volunteers and their four-legged helpers during a street collection closer to home in Welshpool. At Hillcrest, she was shown around the kennels and chatted to staff and volunteers about the life-saving and rehabilitation work GRW does with these former racing greyhounds.

Following the VIP visit, GRW founder Alain Thomas said: "It was lovely to welcome Eluned Morgan to Hillcrest and have the opportunity to talk with her about the work of Greyhound Rescue Wales. We were delighted to hear she met our volunteers in a very wet Welshpool recently, and even more so when she took the time to travel to Ammanford to visit our rehoming centre.

“GRW staff, volunteers and supporters are extremely passionate about giving former racing greyhounds and lurchers a life after their working years, and Eluned Morgan’s interest means a great deal to us.”

Eluned Morgan AM said: “I was really pleased to be able to follow up my meeting with volunteers in Powys with a visit to the rehoming centre in Carmarthenshire. As a country, we take animal welfare seriously in Wales. That is due in part to the hard work and awareness raising being undertaken day in, day out by staff and volunteers like Alain and Sandra.”

Greyhound Rescue Wales was formed in 1993 and opened Hillcrest in 2013 following a large bequest. The organisation takes in greyhounds after their racing days, some of whom are injured, as well as older dogs who have had a life after racing but whose owners can no longer keep them.
