A PLANNED closure of one of Ammanford main roads will not go ahead, it has emerged.

High Street was due for closure on Monday for essential surfacing works to be carried out between the road and where it meets the A483 (College Street).

The work was expected to have taken two weeks and motorist would have been diverted onto a route that took them via Wind Street and then Ffordd William Walker- the road and roundabout alongside Carregaman -and vice-versa.

But Carmarthenshire County Council have now said that the planned closure is not going ahead as planned and it appears no future date has been set.

Two weeks ago, after the original closure date had been released, the Guardian highlighted how the works had heightened town council concerns about the traffic problems and left the discussion of a second bypass back on the agenda.

Ammanford Town Council discussed the closure at their February meeting leading county councillor Colin Evans to urge for a push for second stage of the Ammanford relief road scheme- which would see traffic bypassing the town and moving from Tycroes alongside Tesco and connecting with the new relief road which has been created via Foundry Road.

Fears were also raised over the impact the closure would have on routes in the town used heavily during peak and school-run times and how it would increase what was described the already “unmanageable“ traffic problems around Ammanford.
