AS S4C celebrates the 40th anniversary of popular soap opera Pobol y Cwm, the channel on Tuesday, 14 October will broadcast an honest and moving film portrayal of an actor who played one of the TV drama’s most captivating characters.

For years, Jac Daniels was among the most memorable characters in Pobol y Cwm and the man who played him, Dafydd Hywel, remains one of Wales’ most compelling actors.

Dafydd Hywel is a colourful, deep-thinking man who is prepared to share his views in an honest and forthright manner when necessary. But, when the cameras of Double Agent Films followed him for a period of six days in filming the documentary DH, we get a true glimpse of the man behind the actor.

The 68-year-old actor, originally from Garnant, has been a giant on stage and screen over the past five decades.

He has been a central character in a host of successful film and television productions, including Y Pris, I Fro, Breuddwydion and Alcoholig Llon among other drama series on S4C and network series such as The Indian Doctor, The Bill and Holby City to name but a few.

Recently, he has been one of the stars of the Sky drama series Stella, written by actress and writer Ruth Jones along with co-writer David Peet. The location of that series in Ferndale is one of the locations featured in the documentary DH.

Viewers will also follow Dafydd Hywel at home in Capel Hendre and in the Amman Valley where he grew up.

He also takes us to other places important to him - including Cilmeri, in Radnor, where Llywelyn II, the last Prince of Wales was killed and the village of Rosebush in Pembrokeshire.

The film documentary is directed and produced by Dylan Wyn Richards, who directed the film Burton: Y Gyfrinach (Burton: The Secret), which saw Dafydd Hywel portray Richard Burton’s brother, Ivor in such a memorable way.

That film won the prestigious 'Spirit of the Festival' award at the Celtic Media Festival two years ago for its dramatic interpretation of a fateful day in the life of Richard Burton and his brother Ivor Jenkins in June 1968 at the Hollywood star’s villa, Pays de Galles.

The performances of both Dafydd Hywel and Richard Harrington, who played Burton, were highly praised by TV critics at the time.

Catch Dafydd Hywel on Tuesday, October 14 on S4C at 9.30pm.
