AMMANFORD Cricket Club may have to consider moving their headquarters because of potential safety issues at Ammanford Park.

That is the view of county councillor Anthony Jones after planners blocked plans for the club to replace one of the park’s four tennis courts with two practice nets.

Speaking after councillors voted 9-7 against the plan, Cllr Jones suggested that the 2012 South Wales Premier League champions – who have been based in the park for over a century – had become “victims of their own success”.

"Given the club's greater degree of professionalism, cricket balls are being sent far in excess of distances they were hit before," he said

“Many residents are concerned when walking through the park – perhaps the time has come for a risk assessment to be carried out.”

In a letter to the Guardian, the cricket club say they were “devastated” by last week’s decision and are considering an appeal.
