FANCY waking up to the sound of birds singing instead of the dreaded alarm clock? Ever wondered which birds you can hear singing in your garden?

Well now you can experience the magic of the dawn chorus at WWT Llanelli Wetland Centre in Llwynhendy On Saturday, May 9.

The event consists of a guided walk around the reserve to listen to the bird-world wake up as dawn breaks over the Burry Inlet.

Starting at 6am and lasting approximately two hours, this is a great chance to improve your recognition of bird songs with the help of an expert guide.

And as a reward for the early start there will be a home-made cooked breakfast and a well deserved cuppa waiting for all the visitors at the Centre’s Estuary cafe.

Nigel Williams, Centre Manager and leader of the walk, said: “We have been running the Dawn Chorus event for a number of years and it has always been a great success.

"At this time of year we have so many species of birds on our reserve, many of which have migrated from Africa.

“Over the years we have heard the distinctive songs of the Cetti’s warbler, songthrush and whitethroat to name but a few.

"We often have birds mimicking the songs of other birds so it’s great way of learning to distinguish between the songs and calls of different birds, especially those of a similar species.

“It’s a bit like birdwatching with your eyes closed you have to use your other senses to determine the identity of birds – it really is a great skill to learn.”

Children in the group will also get a chance to use nifty sound guns to really home in on the specific songs of each bird.

These parabolic reflectors allow you to collect a series of sounds which are then transmitted to a set of headphones, adding a fun and educational element to the event.

So what better way to start your day than to a chorus of birdsong in the great outdoors. It’s sure to put you in a chirpy mood for the rest of the day.

The cost is £15 for adults and £10 for children over four which includes a full cooked breakfast. Booking essential..
