What a success story! The saving of the red kite is one of the major changes I have seen over my working life.
It all began with a surprise pair of nesting eagles somewhere in the wilds beyond Llandovery.
They would never say exactly where.
I knew the nest was protected by the SAS, but I was not allowed to print that at the time.
I was watching a cricket match in Carmarthen when the first kite ventured that far south.
It was immediately sent packing by a pair of much smaller birds who presumably had a nest full of babies nearby.
They dive-bombed it and harried it until it turned tail and fled up the Towy Valley, still with a distinguished flap of wings, but obviously realising it was not welcome.
Now, apparently, twitchers come from all over the world to see them, bringing us a good chunk of tourist revenue as well.
Now it seems they are so common they are terrorising birds and bird-lovers alike in Gloucestershire.
Not through being bloodthirsty but by hogging the bread on the bird tables.
So a great success. Perhaps some other rare bird will be next.
But we shouldn’t use it to encourage those who want to bring back the wolf.
I do not fancy walking through woods with them around, eh grandma.
