THERE is nothing better on these balmy summer days than heading into the great outdoors to explore what’s on our doorstep.

Here is an opportunity for the whole family to find a few hours to ride out and follow the Amman Valley Riverside Path for 15 kilometres, or as far as you wish to go.

It now runs the length of the valley from Pantyffynnon to Brynaman.

Walk or cycle while enjoying the tranquil green surrounds and the soothing river tones as it flows beside the path which is well surfaced and great for wheelchairs and buggies.

From Ammanford the path dives into woodlands, cool and shaded when hot, a perfect place for spotting squirrels and other wildlife.

Follow the path through trees and clearing, until you emerge at the rivers side, where the thinning trees reveal views to the Black and Betws Mountains. Keep an eye out for the many different birds, including herons and buzzards as they feed along the river.

You’ll pass a suspension bridge, great for views along the river, spotting underwater fish and there’s fun to be had by making the bridge swing from side to side by shifting your weight from one foot to another.

A sit down on the riverbank is a must, to skim stones, dip your feet or just to relax and watch the flowing water.

The path passes through children’s playgrounds and sporting parks as you follow the wooded corridor through Glanaman and Garnant, both offering small diversions to local pubs for a quick bite or refreshing drink, before continuing.

Leaving Garnant the verdant woods return with their wildlife and birdsong, as the path follows the Amman to Brynaman. Swing back to Ammanford along the path or if walking perhaps by bus.
