Ystrad enjoy fine victory

Ystradgynlais ended their season on a high with a hard fought win away against Swansea Valley opposition in the form of Trebanos.

It was a wet cold evening, which caused a lot of handling errors from both teams. It did however allow the game to be come a battle and an entertaining one at that.

Trebanos began the strongest with an impressive 40 yard penalty from fly half Rhodri Thomas.

This lead was however, short lived with strong running from winger Mathew Holdsworth placing Ystrad in an attacking position.

A line out soon after produced a try from a driving line out for veteran number eight David Love.

Ystrad immediately attacked from the kick off using quick hands in the wet weather to free full back Sean Harries.

The full back beat men with ease and put the Blues in an excellent position in the Trebanos half, eventually leading to a try for talented flanker Carwyn Lawrence.

Trebanos pulled themselves back into the game with another well struck penalty from outside half Thomas.

The Trebanos pack began disrupting that of Ystrad and competing in all areas.

Ystrad did however manage to score again before half time to leave some breathing space when mobile prop Ryan Evans drove over from close range.

Daniel Holsgrove converted to give Ystrad a 17 - 6 lead at the interval.

The second half became a very frustrating time for the Blues as the searched for the all important bonus point.

Trebanos clawed back again this time Thomas slotting over two penalties and reducing the deficit to five points.

Ystrad needed something to inspire them and that came in the form of former captain and fan favourite Kirt Thomas.

The back rower looked powerful and electric from the second he came on.

He began running at the opposition causing them problems.

Hooker Chris Thomas and centre Keiron Jones also began running hard and hitting gaps. The three linked up superbly and played off each other managing to bring others into the game and create momentum.

The final quarter belonged to Ystrad as they ran in four superb tries.

These were scored by Mathew Soroka, Mathew Owen and the bulldozer Kieron Jones score a brace.

Replacement Jamie Roberts also contributed with three conversions.

There is one more game to be played before the end of the season and the Blues currently wait for Abercraf to agree a suitable date for the Swansea Valley cup final.
