Penygroes 27 St Clears 20

Division Five West

PENYGROES continued their faultless start to the new season with a third successive bonus point win to lead Division Five West by a point.

An early try by centre Jonny Singleton, who cut through the St Clears defence with ease after just three minutes, the impressive Chris Powell converting, suggested the hosts would enjoy a fairly comfortable afternoon.

St Clears, however, hit back hard to grab two tries and take a deserved 10-7 lead after 15 minutes.

The match was developing into an intriguing contest between a big St Clears pack and a much slicker and quicker Penygroes back line.

A fluent counter-attack saw Penygroes wing Phil Morgan scorch over for a great try after 20 minutes and he repeated the act just three minutes later, Powell converting to put his side 19-10 up.

After a nasty head injury to skipper Matthew Evans Singleton burst clear for his second try to secure his side a bonus point and a 24- 10 half time lead.

The second half was marred by injuries and yellowcards.

St Clears reduced the arrears to four points with two forward driven tries butPowell calmed Penygroes nerves with a well-struck penalty.

Penygroes visit high-flying Bynea next Saturday.
