Llandeilo 5 Tumble 16

Division Three West

TUMBLEgrabbed all four points with a disciplined performance against a lively Llandeilo side.

From the outset, the reliable Steve Hewitt kicked a penalty with the first two minutes and, although the backs were a little rusty with their ball skills, they did cause problems against a static defence.

The Tumble pack were dominant on their own ball and when Llandeilo infringed, Hewitt banged over his second penalty from 20 metres after 18 minutes of play. Llandeilo’s full back Celfyn Davies missed with two simple 30-metre penalties unlike Hewitt who kicked his third after 24 minutes.

Llandeilo tried running ball in hand but strong defensive work by the industrious Mike Powell and the athletic Dan Owen were able to stop most advances.

Both sides had chances to score with overlaps but were foiled by some poor passing with overlaps created.

Llandeilo were able to work the ball upfield through Matthew Davies and, when they were awarded a scrum in the visitors’ 22, they worked the ball wide for wing Ceitho Williams to score in the corner.

The second half saw Tumble defend several Llandeilo attacks but again, poor passing and some strong tackling from Rhys Lewis and Mark Kinnaird stopped the home side from scoring.

Tumble then went down to 14 men following a yellow card but Llandeilo couldn’t capitalise. Tumble’s scrum created problems for the home side and plentiful ball from the linesout through Nathan Wilcox and Owen, ensured the Magpies kept going forward.

When diminutive outside half James Owens put up a kick and chase, Tumble flyer Gareth Jones was able to pounce on the loose ball, he fed Daniel Mathias up in support and he crossed for a try which Hewitt converted after an hour’s play.

Tumble held on to record a fine victory and they next face league leaders Amman United at Parc Y Mynyddmawr in what will be a battle royale.
