Rhys nods Ammanford to perfect headstart

Welsh League Division Two

Ammanford 2 Cwmaman Institute 0

AMMANFORD got off to a great start and had their visitors’ defence under pressure from the first.

Michael Roberts broke clear on five minutes but dragged his shot wide, only to be presented with another opportunity just minutes later, but again he saw his effort drift outside a post.

With the hosts sensing blood, another foray forward had Cwmaman on the back foot, but the visitors were able to scramble clear with their goal intact.

Two Cwmaman goalline clearances followed in short order before an Owen James effort went wide of a Cwm post.

After such a pulsating opening 20 minutes it was clear that Cwmaman would not be able to hold out, provided Ammanford kept their heads and maintained their belief that the elusive goal would eventually come.

On 30 minutes, it duly arrived as Rhys Fisher offered support and found himself free to nod home at the back post.

Cwm squandered a great chance to level just before the interval.

However, Cwm somehow managed to ensure the result remained in the balancve as they kept the deficit at just 1-0 until the 75th minute, when Roberts made up for his early wastefulness with a fine strike.

James created the opportunity with a brilliant run and cross which found the unmarked Roberts, who smashed home a stunning volley from the edge of the area.

Ammanford continued to pressure the visiting defence right to the final whistle and, while victory ensured three welcome points, the two-goal advantage was far from a true reflection of the home side’s dominance.

On Saturday, Ammanford host Cardiff Corries (KO 2.30pm). The club has also introduced a new season ticket that can purchased from club officials.
