Waun win to avenge big defeat

Gwaun cae Gurwen 79.25 Briton Ferry Steel Combine 72

THE Waun played host to Briton Ferry Steel Combine, who had beaten them on their own green by a comfortable 25 shots earlier in the season.

For some reason known only to the Combine bowlers, the visitors rarely find a full side to play away matches, and this was again the case on Saturday as they were only able to field 13 players.

Waun, meanwhile, could only muster 12.

On a good running green and a glorious sunny day, the Waun took the initiative and led 17-14 after five ends.

However the Combine fought back and they led 36-33 after ten ends with three of their rinks ahead.

The decision to take tea at the end of the game rather than midway through the proceedings appeared to benefit the Waun as, by the completion of 15 ends, they led 59-50.

They maintained their control until the end, eventually running out 79.25-72 winners to earn 12 points compared to Combine’s two.

Next Saturday the Waun travel to the Gnoll in Neath.
