Megan stars at Butlins festival

CWMGORS RFC took three junior teams to Butlins, Minehead, for a tournament organised by Leicester Tigers.

U7s Cwmgors’ Mini Marvels put in some great performances against tough opposition and were unfortunate to lose both their opening group stage games, against Camberley and Worcester, 5-3.

But the youngsters rallied in their final group game to play out a thrill 5-5 draw against Minehead.

They went down 4-1 to Worcester in the Plate semifinal to set up a rematch against Minehead for the third-place play-off.

In an entertaining game with defensive and offensive strengths on show, the Mini Marvels triumphed thanks to a last-gasp try from Owain Brayley to secure third with a 4- 3 victory.

The Marvels put on some fine displays with Megan Carter earning the U7s competition’s magic moment award for her fine solo score, which was named try of the tournament by the Leicester Tigers’ management team U9s As the only girl in the U9s tournament Jodie Trotman had a lot to prove, but her blistering pace left the boys standing.

Cellan Jones, Iestyn Thomas and Scott Williams provided quick clean ball from the setpiece to allow Josef Davies to work the fringes and free up Ceirian Thomas to break the line while Mathew Smith and Lloyd Lewis put in some superb defensive work.

Cwmgors were rewarded for their efforts with a place in the Vase final but finished as runners up.

U11s The U11s side faced a tough group and started off against the Old Albanians in a game that finished 0-0.

The youngsters narrowly lost their remaining two group games – against an experienced Aylesford side and the eventual tournament champions Camberley.

Cwmgors were drawn against another strong Aylesford side in the semi-final of the Bowl competition and they took control with an early try before adding a quick second and holding on to their narrow lead for their first win of the tournament.

A well-drilled and experienced Hinckley outfit awaited Cwmgors in the final and the English side claimed the only score of a tight first half.

Cwmgors continued to do themselves proud with some ferocious tackling and huge hits, but it was not enough to triumph on the day.
