DIVISION FOUR WEST Amman Utd 53, Betws 12 AMMAN UTD bounced back from their agonising quarterfinal cup defeat to concentrate on their league challenge with an emphatic derby win over Betws.
Betws started badly as the homesters took advantage of a knock-on to spread the ball wide for wing Rhys Williams to score in the first minute.
Centre Rhys Thomas quickly broke through after a loose ball and found number eight Carl Worsfold in support to take the scoring pass. Thomas converted to give the hosts a 12-0 lead.
TheAmmanwere again fortunate with a kind bounce from a defensive penalty which was picked up by chasing wing Steffan Phillips, who sprinted in under the posts.
Thomas converted to stretch Utd’s lead to 19 points in as many minutes.
Betws eventually hit back when they took a strike against the head from a scrum 20 metres from the Amman line.
Number eight Wayne Comley quickly fed scrum half Dylan Rees to scamper over. Outside half Nick White added the extras.
However, the homesters kept up the pressure and second row Mathew Wrigley peeled round the front of the lineout to power over in the corner and give Utd a comfortable 24-7 half-time lead.
Wrigley was sin-binned at the start of the second half, but the visitors were unable to take advantage as they lost Nick White through injury in an already depleted back division.
Rhys Thomas put the Amman side further ahead with a penalty kick before Betws wing Rhys Williams briefly reduced the deficit with a try following a quickly taken penalty from battling scrum half Dylan Rees midway through the half.
However, from this point onwards it was one-way traffic as Utd demonstrated some exhibition rugby as their ever-confident back division ran the ball fromall areas of the field at every opportunity.
Centre Christian Madge was the first to benefit, with outside half Adrian Thomas, wing Dean Williams and Rhys Thomas adding further tries as they continued to expose some rather disappointing defensive work from the visitors.
On Saturday, Betws host Milford Haven while theAmman are on the road at Llanybydder.
