PENYGROES launched their NewYear action with a superb performance against a quality Bynea XV who performed at a level way above that suggested by their league position.

In a fast and furious first half, the sides scored two penalties apiece, with some quality rugby evident from both sides.

Playing with a fairly strong breeze, Bynea enjoyed a territorial advantage but were unable to turn this into tries and were perhaps fortunate to end the half on level terms.

Two minutes into the second half and totally against the run of play, Bynea shocked the Groes with a fine movement which sawtheir outside half chip ahead and score between the posts.

The successful conversion gave them a 13-6 lead.

Stung into action, Penygroes stormed back and within two minutes a great forward drive sawnumber eight Gareth Davies drive over for his sixth try of the season and his third in the last two games.

Chris Powell converted to level the scores and just five minutes later landed a superb long-range penalty to give his side a deserved lead.

Penygroes continued to dominate with lock Gareth Beynon having a superb match in lineout and loose. It was no surprise when a fine handling move from both forwards and backs resulted in right wing Darren Price scorch over for a fine try.

Powell narrowly failed with the conversion but minutes later landed another longrange penalty to claim unassailable 24-13 lead.

Easily Penygroes’ best display of the season saw them through to a deserved win and they can now look forward to next week’s visit of Pontiets with the title still a realistic ambition.
