LLANDOVERY College skipper Gerard Ellis has been included in the Rugby World All Stars Team of the Christmas Term, writes TOM HUGHES.

It has prompted Llandovery College coach Iestyn Thomas to predict the brightest of futures for the outstanding youngster.

The world’s largest selling rugby magazine announced its selection of the leading schoolboy players for the period between September 1 and December 31, 2011.

Ellis gets a place at flanker in a star-studded side as one of just two boys from Welsh schools to find favour with the magazine.

Selection for the All Stars Team is considered a reliable indicator of future stardom and current Llandovery College coach Iestyn Thomas was full of praise for the 18- year-old.

“What is remarkable about Gerard is his all round ability to play literally everywhere in the pack,” said the ex-London Welsh and Harlequins coach.

“Wherever he has played for us he has produced quality performance after quality performance.”

“I rate him as highly as any boy we have handled over the years and I am not exaggerating when I say that includes the likes of Craig Quinnell, Gwyn Jones, Alun Wyn Jones and George North.”

“In the present College side, he is the best scrummager, the best hooker, the strongest ball carrier in the back row and the most dynamic forward in the loose that we have.”

Ironically, his best performance was in the narrow 34-33 defeat by the Scarlets academy Coleg Sir Gar side where he shone at No8.

On January 2 he also played for the Drovers in the Principality Premiership game against Pontypool and caught the eye with a fine allround performance.

Coming on for the injured Mathew Harbut in the Llandovery back row early in the second half, young Ellis confirmed his huge promise with some surging runs, big tackles and clever covering.
