AMMAN United lowered the colours of the previously unbeaten Wanderers by inflicting the Llanelli side’s first defeat of the season.

Victory for United ensured they savoured the sweet taste of revenge following the Wanderers’ triumph at Cwmaman Park in early September.

Amman were full value for the win, taking the game to the leaders in a very entertaining clash in which two very good sides gave as good as they got in an excellent advert for Division Four West rugby.

With Wanderers nine points ahead of secondplaced Amman at the opening whistle, United knew a good start would prove important.

Crucially, United claimed the opening score when a speculative chip ahead from Wanderers went straight to Amman wing Joel Foster. He drew his man, before putting in prolific centre Christian Madge for an impressive fifteenth try of the season.

The entertaining rugby from both sides continued and United punished the opposition for some sloppy play soon after when a kick ahead fell to back row Sean Mangan, who galloped in from all of 40 metres to touch down a fine fivepointer.

It got better for the visitors when, after further heavy pressure on a beleaguered Wanderers try line, the gaps opened up again and the pressing play carved an opening for Rhys Thomas to canter over for the third try.

The home side were rewarded for some good pressure just before halftime with a converted try, their only score of the match as it turned out.

The second half continued in similar vein with both teams trying to spread the ball at every opportunity.

But unlike in the first half, defences were more on top and Amman were to be frustrated in their attempt to nick that elusive bonus try – it seemed to have come late on, but with Amman seemingly looking set to go through and score, the referee blew up to bring the players back without allowing enough advantage.

A superb team performance from the Reds, with a notable showing from Man of the Match – centre Richard Dunne – who tackled like a dervish all afternoon.

Amman’s win cuts Wanderers’ lead at the top to five points, but United will have to muster another titanic performance again this weekend when they make the trip to thirdplaced Milford Haven, who lie just two points behind Amman in third place with a game in hand.
