Severely depleted by late withdrawals due to illness and work commitments Ammanford defied the odds to record an outstanding away victory against yet another Championshipbound team.

The hosts opened with a flourish and were ahead within minutes as wing Kane Henderson outstripped the defence to score under the posts.

Scrum-half Chris Williams added the conversion 7 – 0.

Boosted by the early try Llanharan surged forward and dominated the early forward exchanges. Their dominant pack were rewarded when prop James Greenfield finished off a rolling maul to record their second try, again converted by Chris Williams 14 – 0.

With barely 15 minutes of the game elapsed the situation was looking ominous for the visitors.

A brief respite saw Ammanford outside half Carwyn Richards reduce arrears with a well struck penalty 14 – 3; and he was unlucky not to record a second long range effort soon after.

Ammanford looking more settled appeared to have weathered the early storm which made for a far more even contest but were then dealt a cruel double blow losing both hooker Ryan Williams and prop Samson Lee within five minutes of the interval.

A reshuffle of the pack to accommodate substitutes Wyn Jones and Rob Knight ensued.

Llanharan then extended their lead with a Chris Williams penalty 17 – 3.

Whatever Captain Mark Jones said to his players during the interval it had the desired effect.

Ammanford were resurgent and were quickly rewarded when prop Dylan Cooper powered over for a well deserved try, 17 -8.

The home team looked to be buckling under the pressure and conceded a penalty which Carwyn Richards converted to close the deficit 17-11.

Ammanford now playing with confidence demonstrated a hunger for victory.

Props Cooper and Jones and outstanding No:8 Rhydian Jones kept battering the home defence and the Ammanford scrum was dominant.

The continued pressure resulted in a second try for prop Dylan Cooper, this time converted by Richards despite being injured in the build up, to edge Ammanford ahead 17-18.

The hosts were rocking. Young wing Rhys Davies then followed up a chip ahead and supported by the impressive back rowers Mathew Bartlett and Jones caused chaos in the home defence which brought another penalty opportunity which Richards again converted 17-21.

A rare excursion into Ammanford territory resulted in a Llanharan penalty which Williams put over to reduce the deficit 20-21.

The game was poised for a grandstand finish, some scrappy play ensued and Llanharan increased the pressure but could not penetrate a steadfast Ammanford defence, superbly marshalled by Mathew Brayley.

Ammanford were forced to clear their lines and scrum half Iwan Mainwaring gained respite with a long clearance kick to the home 22.

An infringement from the line-out gave Richards the opportunity to extend the lead 21-24 to Ammanford.

Despite losing Brayley to injury Ammanford held on to record a terrific, morale boosting away victory.

This performance was a testament to the hard work the players and coaches have done in terms of conditioning and preparation.

Next Saturday Ammanford will welcome league leaders Waunarlwydd to the Rec in what promises to be a mouth-watering encounter.
