Ammanford RFC U16s recently held a five-team tournament involving Ammanford, Bonymaen, Felinfoel, Nelson, Tonmawr.

Ammanford’s first game - against Nelson – was always going to be a tough test based on past meetings.

The home side made some silly mistakes to allow Nelson plenty of chances, but Ammanford held out to win 10-5.

Their second match was another tough encounter, this time against Tonmawr. However, some solid work from the forwards gave quick ball to the backs who scored two tries to ensure a 10-0 victory.

Ammanford's then faced Felinfoel. With both teams having players in the Scarlets development squad, it was going to be an exciting game and Ammanford started the stronger.

The hosts were comfortably ahead 10-0 at half-time, but good work from Felinfoel kept them in the game and the visitors scored twice in the second half to ensure a 10-10 draw.

Ammanford's last game - which they needed to win to reach final – saw them come up against Bonymaen. The hosts made hard work of the game, but came out eventual winners 10-0.

The final was due to see a rematch between Ammanford and Felinfoel, but unfortunately Felinfoel had picked up too many injuries and were unable to field a side meaning third-placed Nelson would face the unbeaten hosts.

Before the final however was the small matter of the third place play-off shield which pitted Tonmawr against Bonymaen, with Tonmawr running out eventual 15-5 winners.

The final game of the tournament saw Ammanford take on Nelson in a hard-fought and exciting affair.

With both teams beginning to tire and feel the strain of the day’s battles Ammanford managed to maintain their form and run out 10-5 winners with new captain Sion James lifting the trophy.

Ammanpord RFC Juniors would like to thank all the referees and teams, local companies for their kind donations and to all parents who helped to make it a successful tournament.
