Furnace 7 Penygroes 0

Without prop Mark Rodaway, Penygroes were always likely to struggle up front against a powerful Furnace eight and it came as no surprise that the scrum flew backwards at the first head-to-head.

Furnace applied almost total control for the first 20 minutes and the only surprise was their failure to breach a resolute but frantic Groes defence.

Twice Furnace broke through only to lose the ball in the act of touching down.

To Groes’ credit, they weathered the onslaught and were unlucky not to score following an astute kick to the corner which Furnace just dealt with.

From the resultant restart, Furnace mounted a series of attacks and fully deserved their converted try after 27 minutes.

Things got worse for Groes four minutes later when Matt Evans was harshly yellow carded, but their defence was magnificent in the ten minutes before the break despite almost constant pressure, mostly on their own line.

Groes started the second half much more positively and with Evans re-entering the fray looked capable of getting something from the match, but a series of refereeing decisions meant both sides became increasingly frustrated and consequently play degenerated into a niggly affair.

Furnace missed two kickable penalties in the last ten minutes and as a result Penygroes secured a valuable losing bonus point to keep their faint promotion hopes alive.

Penygroes entertain Llangwm at Penygroes Park at 1pm on Saturday.
