Welsh Cup v Llanelli

Ammanford moved into the last eight of the Welsh Cup with a 10-wicket stroll over Llanelli at Stradey on Sunday.

With en eye on the weather, Ammanford skipper Craig Moloney invited Llanelli to bat and opening bowlers Tom Maynard (1-22) and Alun Evans (2-6) made an immediate impact.

With the score on 24-3 after 13 overs, it seemed Llanelli were never going to get out of the blocks. But veteran Kevin Thomas (44), with a characteristically unconventional innings, managed to give the home innings some impetus.

However four wickets from Rhydian Harris and two from Matthew Fisher made sure the impetus was not maintained.

Two spectacular catches in the deep by Rhys Culley and Matthew Fisher helped dismiss Llanelli for 137. Ammanford’s response was pure professionalism.

Refusing the tempting option of trying to smash the home bowlers all over the park, openers Harris (61no) and Fisher (66no) played well within themselves, ticking of the required runs with ten overs to spare.

The pair currently average 166 and 81 respectively in this season’s cup event.

Ammanford now go into this week’s quarter-final draw.
