A clinical six-wicket victory away to the Carmarthen Wanderers on Saturday hauled Ammanford to within touching distance of Ynysygerwn, who saw their match abandoned due to rain.
Another superb century from Rhydian Harris set up the perfect scenario for this Saturday’s table-topping clash at the Park between the defending champions and leaders Ynys.
Despite losing an early wicket, Carmarthen got away to a promising start. A half-century partnership for the second wicket looked a promising platform until spinners Dean Cosker (4-41), Andrew Salter (0-42) and Matthew Fisher (2-30) slowed the run rate right down.
Giles Thomas (47) and Craig Thomas (60) batted well for Carmarthen, but their colleagues couldn’t wriggle out of the iron grip the spinners exerted on them and they closed on 177-7 - a total eminently within the reach of the league’s finest batting line-up.
Despite two early setbacks, the visitors never looked in the s lightest discomfort. Matthew Fisher frustratingly departed on 25 when he looked in total control and Alun Evans was disappointingly given out lbw when he had snicked the ball on to his pad.
But if Carmarthen thought they had a sniff of unexpected victory, they were soon to be disillusioned. Steffan Jenkins joined Rhydian Harris at the crease and the pair took Ammanford to within six runs of victory before both inexplicably gave away their wickets.
Harris was out for exactly 100 whilst Jenkins (38) played a characteristically patient supporting role.
The victory, with eight overs to spare, yielded 23 points and Ammanford look forward with relish to the visit of Ynysygerwn whom they now trail by just four points.
