AMMANFORD stormed to another superb victory despite the pack being given a lesson by a Cardigan side that arrived at the Recreation Ground playing like the England rugby team.

From the kick-off, the visitors huge pack showed their game plan driving Ammanford back with a 40m rolling maul.

However, from the home team's first attack player-coach Aled Griffiths was tackled inches short, but from the scrum, no 9 Ioan Jones darted over for the first touch down with winger Craig Maloney converting.

The Cardigan pack again pegged the home side back in their own 22 and they drove over for flanker Hugh Davies to cross.

Ammanford again went on all out attack, winger Gary Stephens beat several defenders in his run to the try line, but excellent defence held him up over the try line.

From the scrum, Ammanford's No8 Chris Jones powered through but again the defence held him up over the try line.

After the interval, Ammanford increased the tempo when a good three-quarter move sent centre Alan Rees over wide out for the second try, again well converted by Maloney for a 14-5 lead.

With the large crowd expecting another try bonanza Ammanford were dragged into a forward battle against far bigger opponents who kept the ball for long periods with up the jumper tactics.

Ammanford's three-quarters were also having an off day with poor handling and wrong options.

The hosts soon lost prop Aled Griffith to the sin bin, and for the next ten minutes were under the cosh.

A poor missed tackle in midfield allowed Cardigan centre Iestyn Crompton to dash over for the visitors second try converted by scrum half Aaron Wilson cutting the lead to 14-12.

Griffiths rejoined the game and Ammanford went on the attack, the pack finally getting to grips with Cardigan and No8 Chris Jones looked to go over but again the defence held him up over the line.

Ammanford finally broke the defence with full back Mathew Fisher once again showing his class, side stepping his way over for a brilliant try under the posts despite an attempted head high tackle. Maloney converted for an unassailable 21-12 lead.

Ammanford were now in control, a wonderful threequarter move saw Fisher send winger Maloney away for a 40m sprint to the tryline but somehow a defending arm dragged him back in the act of touchdown and another try was lost.

With the last move of the game scrum half Ioan Jones went away on the half way line, a fourth try looked certain, but his pass went to ground.

Cardigan took advantage and centre Hugh Gage went away on a run to the corner for the visitors third try and earn a well deserved bonus point.

A wake up call to the Ammanford side, but although not at their best, and unlucky not to get a bonus point, are still top.
