Former Cresselly and Pembrokeshire player Jack Murphy flourished but Glamorgan floundered as the Welsh side were hammered by an innings and 172 runs by Kent in Canterbury.

It was Glamorgan’s tenth defeat of the season, a result that ensures the Welsh county will finish bottom of Division 2.

On day one Murphy, back in the side at No 3, made 80 from 181 balls, hitting 13 fours en route to the second half century of his first class career.

But he played very much a lone hand as his side were shot out for 186, with promotion chasing Kent duly responding with 436 as Zak Crawley cracked 168.

And by day three this morning, Robert Croft's side were already five wickets down in their second innings, and it was Murphy who again stood firm as he finished unbeaten with 22 off 69 balls, stroking two boundaries - but his display was bittersweet as Glamorgan collapsed to 78 all out.

The 23-year-old drew praise from Croft though, for the manner in which he applied himself in difficult circumstances.

"I thought Jack Murphy was our stand out player in this match and played brilliantly," said Croft.

"He’s got a real solid technique, has a good tempo with the way he plays and showed a lot of application and concentration. He played the ball respectfully.

“He was in there for the long haul, which you don’t see much these days. With modern cricketers you tend to see them block three or four balls they’re then looking to score, but Jack didn’t have that mindset."

Murphy now looks certain to retain his place for Glamorgan's final game of the season at home to Leicestershire on Monday.
