CWMAMMAN United fell to their first defeat under new manager Eirian Rees, as they slipped to a loss at home.

A Monmouth goal, either side of half time, condemned Cwm to a 2-0 defeat in an underwhelming performance from Rees’ men.

It was a critical six pointer for the two teams contesting the final relegation spot in Welsh League Division One, and Cwm came into it on the back of an impressive run.

However, it was a cagey start from the hosts at Grenig Park which saw Monmouth wrestle control in the midfield.

They began to pepper Rob Jones’ goal with efforts from range that the ‘keeper dealt with well.

In the 28th minute though, a low shot was drilled across his goal from wide, and from the ensuing goalmouth scramble the ball fell to a Monmouth player to tap home and put his side a goal to the good.

The Cwm front three were finding it hard to fire and, apart from a strong shot from Ashley Curtis that went straight at the opposing goalkeeper, created very little.

Meanwhile, the visitors continued to look menacing and threatened with a number of counter-attacks, one of which was only stopped by a fantastic last-ditch tackle from Gareth Howarth.

As the half drew to a close, the hosts finally threatened.

Darren Griffiths had beaten the ‘keeper, but his effort was blocked at the last moment and turned around the post.

In the opening minute of the second half Cwm rattled the cross bar with a fantastic long-range effort, but that would be the last chance created in a toothless performance.

Monmouth grew stronger throughout the second period, hitting the post with a beautiful curling effort, having what looked a legitimate goal disallowed, and then doubling their lead on the hour mark.

A poor clearance from the Cwm defence only found the edge of the area, where a waiting Monmouth midfielder rifled it back from where it came and into the net.

The defeat leaves Cwm in the relegation zone, one point behind Monmouth but with two games in hand.

They face each other again in Monmouth this evening for another huge relegation six-pointer.
