Division One West Central

Ammanford 30 Maesteg Quins 45

Ammanford welcomed a much changed Maesteg Quins to the Rec and the hosts again suffered against a team fighting for relegation and prepared to get in almost half a team on permit, led by Bedwas and Swansea outside half Jack Dixon.

The game was played at a high tempo throughout with some quality ball handling and off-loading.

Quins scored an early try, but Ammanford came back with a Rhydian Morris penalty.

The quality players with Maesteg resulted in a power try but again the hosts hit back with a converted try from No.8 Emyr Price to make it 14-10 to the visitors.

Maesteg moved the ball smoothly about the field, directed by Dixon with accurate kicking and distribution.

This soon led to the lead being extended by two tries, both of which he slotted over from all angles.

All Ammanford could do was reply with a couple of penalties, leaving the half time score at 28-16 for the visitors.

To their credit Ammanford came out in the second half with a positive attitude prepared to run the ball from everywhere on the field.

Much of the positive attacking was led from full back by Gareth Rees, who last weekend scored for the Navy against the Army at Twickenham in front of 85.000 crowd.

The pressure led to a penalty under the posts and a quick tap penalty by Iwan Mainwaring saw the scum half go over under the posts, 23-28.

Ammanford kept running and a 60-metre move was finished by a slick offload to Chris Moore who went around under the posts to give Ammanfod an unexpected 30-28 lead.

The tempo set by Ammanford was hard to maintain and when a few last passes went astray the steam started to go out of the hosts and with strong subs to bring on Maesteg started to run hard from all angles and finished with three fine tries the last of which was a pick up and break from the half way by Dixon who fed on for the visitors to score with the last move of the game - to rub salt into the wound Dixon slotted the conversion from the touch line.

Ammanford have one league game left and also the final of the Tovali Bowl against Kidwelly. This will be at Dynvant on May 20 (KO 2.30pm). Come and support the boys after a hard but successful season finishing second in the league.
