Division Three West

Llandybie 40 Llansawel 0

Further overnight rain ensured it was only down to the hard work of the Llandybie committee that the visit of Llansawel could go ahead as scheduled.

As it turned out, the depleted visitors opted for passive scrums from the start but the hosts almost scored from the kick off only for scrum half Tom Griffith to be pulled down yards short.

As in the previous meeting, the Towy Valley side proved hard to break down and it was 25 minutes before Llandybie breached their line when a good thrust from prop Keenan Jones was carried on across field to winger Daf Nicholas who outpaced the cover to score wide out. Aled Tomasson added the extras.

Another forward drive saw Llandybie halted five yards short but Lyndon Davies was on hand to pick up and dive over with Tomasson again converting.

Good carrying from Merlyn McClelland, Nathaniel Butler, Rhydian Jones and Davies kept the home side on the front foot although Llansawel tackled gamely to stem the flow, with Meirion George putting in some big tackles.

Half time arrived with Llandybie 14–0 to the good.

Llansawel found Lyndon Davies increasingly hard to contain as he made good yardage with each burst and off loaded well in contact.

Good handling skills from Llandybie were also on show and a cross-field move put full back Josh Williams in for a score.

Another move soon after with backs and forwards involved gave Davies his second try. Tomasson again added the extras.

A smart scissors move with Richard Davies and Rob Smith put Nicholas into space to score in the left-hand corner. Tomasson added the conversion with a great kick from the touchline.

Despite the passive scrums, Llandybie’s heavier forwards got around the field well and took full part in the cross field moves, another of which put Rob Smith through and he took the contact to offload to Butler who had the ball knocked out of his grasp as he crossed the whitewash.

Winger Josh Cranfield made ground and kicked ahead but was held back. From the ensuing penalty he took a quick tap and almost made the line but captain Rhydian Jones was on hand to pick up and dive over. Tomasson again converted to complete the scoring.

To be fair to Llansawel they were game to the last and never gave up but Llandybie were too good on the day.

Llandybie, who climbed to fifth after the win, travel to Bynea on Saturday.
