League Two West

Amman United 27 Pontarddulais 7

Having lost 69-17 in the corresponding fixture at Bont earlier in the season, Amman United managed to turn the tables in spectacular fashion.

The hosts turned in easily their best performance of the season to earn only their second win - and a valuable bonus point to boot.

Amman were much quicker and sharper around the field with the returning Dai Matthews making a real difference around the park.

After the first 20 minutes, where Bont had some good possession, Amman took control of proceedings with the front-row of Rhys Phillips, Doug Jenkins and, the back-from-injury Liam Mangan, dominating in a fine pack performance. Flanker Dan Jones was superb and skipper Sean Mangan was also again solid.

Behind the scrum, Ryan Williams and Joel Foster looked sharp.

United absorbed early Bont pressure and countered to grab the opening try when busy flanker Alun Lewis galloped over in the corner.

An entertaining encounter, despite the tough conditions, saw the visiting Ambers deservedly level when centre Aled Thomas crossed wide out. Outside half Jonathan Lloyd added the conversion to give the visitors a half-time lead.

Amman bossed the second period thanks to a solid pack platform, which created their second score when the Bont pack disintegrated and the referee awarded the penalty try. Adrian Thomas converted.

It was Thomas’ straight running which carved open the defence as a rampant Amman, showing greater confidence, grabbed a third with Dan Jones on hand to finish off. Thomas again converted.

Almost immediately from the restart, United spread the ball wide to wing Liam Danter, who had played well on his debut, and rewarded the hosts with bonus-earning score.

A late Thomas penalty finally put paid to Bont hopes, but they were second best for the most part.

Amman, with their tails up, will hope to build on the win when they entertain bottom-club Tregaron at Cwmaman Park on Saturday.
