Welsh League Division Two

Cwmamman United 5 Croesyceiliog 1

Cwmamman United moved up to second in the table after an emphatic first half display which yielded five goals without reply against Croesyceiliog.

The home side were dominant from the off but were wasteful in front of goal during the first 20 minutes, spurning a series of dangerous crosses from both flanks courtesy of Liam Soroka and Cory Saunders.

Steven Hughes had two good opportunities but saw one header fly just over the bar while a shot went agonisingly close.

The breakthrough came after 20 minutes when a low 20-yard David Brown shot left Croesyceiliog's keeper Lee Waddon no chance.

Five minutes later a great through ball from Hughes found Soroka on the right to square the ball for Cory Saunders to slot home.

The third arrived on 30 minutes when a scramble in the penalty area ended in Saunders firing home.

On 35 minutes, Hughes headed home from a great Saunders cross to claim his 10th goal of the season. His 11th came two minutes later after he fired past the helpless Waddon.

Croesyceiliog struggled to pose any threat during the first half and must have been glad to hear the half time whistle from referee Tim Drean.

In all fairness to the visitors they came out the second half with much more purpose and dominated large chunks of possession.

Cwmamman found themselves down to 10 men when Saunders was adjudged to have slid in with his studs showing when the Croesyceiliog man was equally guilty.

Much to everyone’s confusion, Mr Drean showed Saunders red but pointed for a free kick to Cwmamman. After changing his mind about the restart, he added insult to injury by cautioning another Cwmamman player for the protest.

The goal of the game came from the visitors on 75 minutes when a Rhys Williams thunderbolt from 30 yards left United keeper Mark Snell no chance.

The stunning strike proved only a consolation however with the game already won.

Cwmamman have now scored 19 goals in their last four games, conceding just one.

Next week, United host Caldicot Town in the round two of the Welsh Cup.
