Swalec Plate – Round One

Pencoed 55 Cwmgors 19

Cwmgors fell at the first hurdle in the Swalec Plate, beaten by a very strong Pencoed side boasting a very well-drilled pack.

The home forwards dominated and provided a real platform for the hosts.

The visitors were second-best for the majority of the first half, despite putting in maximum effort all round.

The Cherries trailed 29-0 at half-time, but never gave up the ghost, and were rewarded with their opening score of the afternoon with a second half try following some good forwards’ build-up play which created space for winger Chris Jones to go over in the corner.

The hosts, who ply their trade in League One West Central, a section higher than Cwmgors, stepped on the gas to build up a 43-5 advantage before a plucky Cwm side grabbed a second try when scrum half Steff Rees broke sharply and went in under the posts, adding his own conversion.

The visitors’ perseverance paid off near the end as second row Richard Greig went over after another strong forward move. Rees again converted, but it proved little more than a consolation.

Cwmgors return to the bread and butter of the league for their first visit to Nantymoel on Saturday.
