Welsh League Division Two

Ammanford 2 Tata Steel 1

Gruff Harrison marked his 100th game in charge of Ammanford AFC by leading his side to a valuable 2-1 win over Tata Steel at the Recreational Ground on Saturday, writes Nick Davies.

In a cagey opening half, the Steelmen had the better of the possession, and had a great opportunity after eight minutes only for Dayle Selvage’s last-ditch tackle to deny the visitors with the goal at their mercy.

Tata then left a good chance go begging on 13 minutes when they fired over from close range.

Ammanford's Liam Edwards came close to his first Welsh League goal, but the youngster’s half-volley at the back post from Morris’ cross was brilliantly tipped over the bar.

On 30 minutes, Tata again nearly went ahead but Morris was on hand to block the effort off the line.

After the interval, the hosts began to take control over proceedings and on 51 minutes, they went ahead.

Craig Frater’s shot inside the area rolled goalward, and eventually rippled the net when a defender cleared into his own goal, resulting in a team celebration with manager Harrison.

However, five minutes later the away side struck back when from a corner, after their initial effort was saved, the Steelers tucked home the rebound to level matters.

But, the visitors shot themselves in the foot just minutes later when they were reduced to ten men after their centre half was handed his marching orders.

Matthew Fisher flicked his way into the area before firing his volley over the bar and Owen James just curled over when the goalkeeper came chasing for a ball outside the box, as Ammanford went in search of a winner.

The home side did gain the lead on 73 minutes when, from a quick corner, James squared for Matthew Harding to smash home, what turned out to be, the winner.

It was a fitting result to mark Harrison’s centenary game. After being named the youngest manager in the club's history, to guiding them to promotion last season, there will no doubt be many more games with Harrison at the helm as he looks to build on the impressive foundations he has laid.
