Llandeilo 17   Penybanc 12

LLANDEILO came out on top of their first ever league encounter with Penybanc at Cae William on Saturday.

A real old-fashioned local derby could have gone the way of the visitors who spent the last five minutes plus the lengthy stoppage time in Llandeilo’s 22 but the hosts’ superb defence held firm and secured a second consecutive home win.

Owain Roberts kicked a couple of penalties for the hosts in the first half to go with an excellent try by Luke Williams who went outside two defenders to score in the corner.

Penybanc responded with a converted try for an interval score of 11-7.

There was no further score for over half an hour after the break but the game was far from being a dour arm wrestle.

Both teams attempted to make good use of what ball came their way, with Banc relying on their stronger scrummage.

And it was the visitors who broke the deadlock with just nine minutes left with a second try which put them a point in the lead.

It’s fair to say that Penybanc had the lion’s share of the game after that but, crucially, they infringed twice during Llandeilo’s visits to their half and Roberts put away both penalties to seal the victory.
