Welsh Cup Second Round

Panteg 2 Ammanford 1 (aet)

AMMANFORD, who have been unbeaten in Welsh League Division Two do far this season crashed out of the Welsh Cup against a team yet to collect a point after three matches in Division Three.

Ammanford dominated early on and should have gone in front after five minutes only for a header to flash wide. Craig Frater, making his first start of the season, then saw an effort well saved just minutes later.

Panteg spurned a number of scoring chances in the minutes that followed with the second effort hitting the side netting.

Panteg remained well in the game up to the 40th minute until they failed to clear a corner properly and James Murray volleyed in the clearance from two yards.

As the half drew to a close Michael Morgan shot wide when well placed but the visitors went into the break in good order.

Ammanford saw an early chance for Michael Morris after the restart before Lloyd Davies was on hand with a tremendous goal-saving defensive clearance.

Mathew Fisher’s shot was saved by the Panteg keeper on 60 minutes and it took a superb save from Ammanford keeper Dafydd Jones to keep the scores level as the game swung from end to end.

Frater then saw a shot saved before Morris had to be replaced after a terrible tackle left him in agony.

Panteg equalised on 70 minutes and pushed forward, forcing Ammanford into desperate defence with Jones pulling off three great saves that earned him the man of the match award.

In extra time the hosts saw a cracking effort come strike the Ammanford bar before the inevitable goal came for the homesters in the 115th minute.

Ammanford tried to get back on terms but it was not to be and the team can only hope that the players injured in what was a very physical game, will recover in time for the encounter at Llanelli.

Ammanford’s next league match is on Saturday, September 26, when they host Dinas Powys (KO 2.30pm).
