JD Welsh Cup

Cwmamman United 4 Garw SGBC 2

Cwmamman entertained Garw from Division Two of the newly formed South Wales Alliance league in the JD Welsh Cup and proved too much for their visitors to handle.

Garw were unbeaten in their division and 3-0 winners in the previous round against Neath League Premier outfit Ynysygerwn.

The hosts began well however and nearly took the lead when from a Liam Soroka corner David Brown struck the post with a powerful header.

Cwmamman eventually got the breakthrough on 15 minutes when a Cory Saunders cross was headed home from Brieg Matthews.

The spurred the visitors into action and they deservedly equalised on 20 minutes after a great run by Lewis Davies down the host's right before he neatly chipped Cwmamman's keeper Robert Jones.

On 30 minutes the visitors went ahead when a mix up in the home defence led to Lewis James heading home into an empty net.

Garw were unlucky not to extend their lead but Jones saved well.

From the resultant throw out Matthews held up the ball under pressure and fed Saunders with a pin point pass before he went on to calmly slot the ball past Garw keeper Thomas Lewis to ensure the sides went into the interval at 2-2.

It was a different Cwmamman in the second half however and their better fitness levels proved key to their success.

They deservedly reclaimed the lead once on 60 minutes through the combination of Matthews and Saunders with the latter netting his second of the afternoon.

Cwmamman were now dominant and after 70 minutes they effectively killed the game off when a great run by Soroka found Brown who calmly placed the ball passed Lewis to score his fifth of the season.

The home side had several opportunities to extend their lead further but were unable to convert their chances.

Their excellent second half performance was enough to see them through to the next round however.

Cwmamman United play Caldicot Town away on Wednesday, September 16, (KO 7.45pm) and on Saturday travel to Dinas Powys kick off 2.30pm.
