Welsh League Cup - Round One

Croesyceiliog 1 Cwmamman United 4

Cwmamman returned from Gwent with a deserved victory against a team they will meet in Welsh League Division Two campaign. The two sides also met in the same competition last season with Cwmamman running out 3-2 victors.

The visitors were on top from the off and controlled midfield possession early on without causing too many problems for the home keeper.

The failure to take advantage of their early dominance appeared to prove crucial as on 15 minutes Croesyceiliog scored against the run of play when Cwmamman keeper Mark Snell spilled a routine catch into the path of the home striker who finished with ease.

The goal was a minor setback however and Cwmamman continued to control much of the game with their slick passing and movement off the ball.

On 30 minutes the visitors were awarded a freekick and David Brown placed the ball over the wall and into the bottom left corner of the goal with the keeper rooted to his line from 25 yards.

Cwmamman continued to create chances before the break but were content to go into the interval on level terms.

Cwmamman brought on Steven Hughes for the injured Sion Dafydd Williams after the break and the newcomer was to play a key role in proceedings.

In fairness Croesyceiliog had a good 15-minute spell in which Hughes picked up a yellow card but three quick goals by Cwmamman killed the game.

The first came from another brilliant Brown free kick, this time from 30 yards.

Substitute Hughes extended the visitors lead before a great team goal saw Gareth Morrell score his first competitive goal for the club to secure passage into the second round.

On 80 minutes a late challenge from Hughes earned him a second yellow and a red but, despite being a man down, Cwmamman finished the game stronger and created several more chances without adding to their total.

Next week Cwmamman United entertain Garw, again in the Welsh Cup, while the reserves visit Longford and the third team travel to AFC Pontardawe.
