South Wales Premier League

Newport v Ammanford

Match abandoned

A precious 12 points from their abandoned match at Newport saw Ammanford safely maintain their place at the top table of Welsh cricket for 2016.

The weather in East Wales allowed sufficient of the game to be played whilst in the west most matches were cancelled.

Ammanford secured invaluable batting points to put them safely out of reach of relegation, leaving Mumbles, St Fagans and Pontarddulais to fight for Premier League survival in next Saturday's final match.

Ammanford lost the toss at Newport and were put in to bat.

They lost Hedd Jones almost immediately, but his fellow opener Rhys Davies was in no mood to hang around and scored a quick-fire 40 from just 26 deliveries faced.

At 49 for two, Matthew Fisher joined skipper Alun Evans, and the pair put on 136 for the third wicket before Fisher departed for 68.

Jack Murphy (23) helped his captain pile on the runs, and Ammanford reached 269 for six in their 50 overs, a massive improvement from recent dismal weeks.

Evans carried his bat for a magnificent 110.

Newport managed to reach 69 for the loss of Sean Coaker's one wicket before the rain came down and put a stop to the match.

The 12 points they gained from this match put Ammanford 22 points clear of bottom placed Mumbles and effectively out of the relegation battle.

Ammanford welcome Ynysygerwn to the Park for Saturday's last league fixture, but can now concentrate on the two big cup matches they play next Bank Holiday weekend.

If they beat Clydach during this coming week, they will face Port Talbot in the SWCA T20 final at the Park on Sunday.

On Bank Holiday Monday, they face Colwyn Bay in the Welsh Cup Final at the Gnoll.
