Mumbles (215-9) beat Ammanford (84)

Ammanford continued their dismal slide down the Premier League with an embarrassing 131 run defeat at Mumbles on Saturday.

Relegation candidates Mumbles were put in to bat by Alun Evans and began well with an opening stand of 47 in the first 10 overs before Dan Lewis-Williams (25) was dismissed by Tom Maynard.

The home batsmen continued to make rapid progress and at their halfway stage were 125 for two.

Ammanford's spinners managed to apply the brakes in the second half, reducing the Mumbles run rate and picking up wickets in the progress.

Mumbles finished on 215 for nine, their top scorer Rhodri Evans scoring 84.

For Ammanford, Matthew Fisher picked up three wickets for 46 and Matthew Roberts two for 35. Sean Coaker also bowled well for his 1-31.

The target of 215 should have been well within Ammanford's scope were their batsmen not reduced to wading through a swamp of superglue.

Opener Rhys Davies departed early on, and the best stand (32) of Ammanford's day came from Hedd Jones (25) and Alun Evans (30).

Evans was scoring off every delivery and looked capable of winning the game on his own before stretching to a ridiculously wide delivery and getting needlessly caught.

The malaise infected the subsequent batsmen and a calamitous collapse saw Ammanford hit Australian depths to be dismissed for 84 with less than half their overs used.

Aneurin Norman bowled well for Mumbles to take four for 19, supported by Dan Lewis-Williams with three for 32.

Next Saturday Ammanford welcome bottom-of-the-table St Fagans who could only manage to score 78 against Bridgend. Spectators are advised to turn up early.

Sunday's Welsh Cup semi-final against Ynysygerwn could not be completed, and will be re-played at Ammanford this coming Sunday. The winners will face an extremely strong Colwyn Bay in the final at the Gnoll on August 23.
