South Wales Premier League T20

Ammanford hosted the preliminary round of the South Wales Premier T20 competition at the Park on Sunday.

Three teams were involved: Ammanford, Carmarthen Wanderers and Ynystawe.

Ammanford comfortably beat the Wanderers in the first match by seven wickets.

Wanderers batted first and scored 124 in their twenty overs. Sam Jones (4-30) and Tom Maynard (3-18) were the chief wicket takers.

Ammanford’s response was confident with Matthew Fisher (43no) leading the charge. Gareth Slade (21no) helped him finish things off with three overs to spare.

In the second match, Ynystawe also beat the Wanderers, setting up a finale between themselves and Ammanford to see who would progress into the next round.

Ynystawe elected to bat first and hit an impressive 156 for five in their 20 overs. Chief run-getter was Tom Davies with 52, though several of the Ynystawe batsmen made useful contributions.

The turning point in Ammanford’s response came when Ynystawe bowler Andrew Beasley accidentally diverted a straight drive on the bowler’s end stumps, thereby running out Ammanford danger-man Alun Evans who was backing up and out of his ground.

Despite a brave effort by Gareth Slade (46) to pull things round, Ammanford fell nine short of their target, leaving Ynystawe to fight on.
