Ammanford lost to Bridgend Town by seven wickets

Ammanford lost their first league outing in a rain-reduced match at the Park on Saturday.

The week before, their match at Cardiff had been lost to the weather but this week they were soundly beaten by a very strong Bridgend team composed entirely of Glamorgan and Minor Counties players.

Bridgend won the toss and invited the home team to bat in difficult conditions on a drying pitch.

The first wicket fell for 15 with Rhys Davies being bowled.

Skipper Alun Evans joined Hedd Jones at the crease and they took the score to 39 before Jones (13) was dismissed.

Matthew Fisher joined his captain and their century partnership defined Ammanford’s innings, both batsmen showing their class in defiance of the difficult conditions.

Fisher was dismissed two short of his half century with the score on 162. Evans (75) was out the next over without adding to the total.

Ammanford reached 177 for six in their allotted 40 overs.

Bridgend knew their luck was in when opener Sam Pearce was dropped off the first ball.

He went on to score a quick 36 despite being dropped twice again before Tom Maynard finally sent him back to the pavilion.

Steady batting by Bradley Wadlam, who had also taken two for 28, saw him carry his bat for an unbeaten 72. He was ably supported by Tom Baker (36).

Bridgend were comfortably home, passing Ammanford’s total for the loss of three wickets with four overs to spare.

Next Saturday Ammanford travel to the Gnoll to play Neath.
