Division Two West Central

Cwmgors 30 Aberavon Green Stars 7

A superb last-match win for Cwmgors ensured the Cherries the bonus point victory that saw them leapfrog Green Stars to an extraordinary fifth-place finish.

Cwmgors Fixture Secretary Jeff Bright was “over the moon” with the season’s end result, particularly the all-round team performance where flanker Darren Williams was named man of the match.

A tight opening half saw home fly-half Steff Rees’ penalty open the scoring before, from a solid scrum platform, number eight Dylan Hills peeled off the back to crash over for the try.

Rees converted, but Aberavon side came back well and earned a penalty try to open their account.

A further Rees penalty gave Cwmgors a hard-fought 13-7 half-time lead.

In the second half, Cwmgors extended their lead with a second try as on-permit Trebanos prop Tristan Morgan went over under the posts to finish off after Rees’ lightning break.

The home backs then finished off a superb back-line move as winger Ethan Price crashed over.

To cap a very good season in an extremely tough division, Cwm earned the elusive bonus point when, from a well-controlled maul, Hills picked up from close range to go over in the corner and claim his side fifth place in the table.

Cwmgors have had a busy couple of weeks with a fixture backlog.

On Tuesday evening, they beat bottom-side Pontycymmer 42-0 at Parc y Werin’s adjacent pitch in a gale force wind after the Maerdy ground had been deemed too dangerous to play on.

Rees capped a fine personal season with a hat-trick of tries and six conversions while hooker Cerith Dennard, lock James Bradley and Hills also crossed. Man of the match was again flanker Darren Williams.

Cwmgors RFC’s annual presentation evening will be held on Saturday, June 13, with Scrum V’s Rick O’ Shea appearing as guest speaker.
