Division Three

Treowen Stars 1 Ammanford 1

Ammanford halted their run of three straight defeats on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at Treowen Stars to move them within a point of promotion, with two games remaining.

The visitors started on the front foot and a Dayle Selvage corner nearly fell for Ashley Richards.

Minutes later, Craig Frater half-volleyed from range into the keeper’s hands.

On 10 minutes, Selvage played a short corner to Ben Soal whose cross for Richards was headed wide.

Ammanford’s missed opportunities proved costly as five minutes later the hosts tapped in a cross at the back post to take the lead.

The away side had the opportunity to respond almost immediately but Nathan Jones’ header flew over the bar from yards out.

They continued to press and went one closer before the break as another Soal cross was rocketed onto the post by a header on 39 minutes, but they failed to equalise before the break.

After the interval, Treowen broke free, but Rhys Owen tracked back to thwart the attack.

Ammanford searched for the goal that would bring them level, however they nearly went 2-0 down when Jones miscontrolled the ball at the back after a short goalkick and James Kirkwood denied the hosts when one-on-one.

The away side kept piling forward and eventually got their just rewards as Mikey Morris’ effort from 22 yards fizzed into the bottom corner on 71 minutes.

Immediately after, Frater broke through the defence and had the opportunity to put his side ahead but his effort was flicked wide.

The striker then shot high and wide.

As they pressed forwards in search of a winner, Ammanford’s defence was left exposed and Kirkwood brilliantly tipped an effort over the bar and he led on to another Treowen effort late on.

The league’s second placed side couldn’t find the winning goal, but took home a point which moves them to within touching distance of promotion.
