Division Two West Central

Cwmgors 34 Resolven 18

Cwmgors began a busy end of season schedule with midweek victory in an entertaining game at the Maerdy.

The visitors opened the scoring with a penalty before the Cherries grabbed the opening try as hooker Cerith Dennard finished off following a controlled move by his fellow pack members.

Outside-half Steff Rees continued his good form by adding the conversion, and soon showed his pace in open play with a superb break to carve open the away defence before galloping over. Rees stepped up to convert his own score.

A Resolven penalty was followed by Cwm’s third try just before the interval when versatile wing Ethan Price went over to finish off a flowing backline move and give the hosts a comfortable 22-6 lead going into the break.

The hosts grabbed another good bonus point soon after the restart as another lightning break opened up the visitors’ defence and centre Jordan Davies was on hand to cross. Rees again converted.

To their credit, Resolven came back and hit a purple patch of their own, crossing for two quick tries to reduce the arrears to 29-18.

But the home side had the last word.

Despite a monumental hailstone shower, they battled away and grabbed a late fifth try as Price crossed for his second near the corner flag.

Cwmgors were due to play Pontycymmer last night (Tuesday) before finishing their campaign with another home fixture - against Aberavon Green Stars - on Saturday.

The club’s annual Players’ Presentation evening has been scheduled for June 13 when Scrum V host Rick O’Shea will be the special guest at Cwmgors RFC clubhouse.
