Welsh League Division Three

Ammanford 0 Pontypridd 3

Ammanford suffered their second defeat in a week as they fell 3-0 to Pontypridd Town at the Rec on Saturday, writes Nick Davies.

After their midweek defeat by rivals Cwmamman, Ammanford would have liked to bounce back immediately with three points, but the visitors completed the double over the Carmarthenshire side.

Things could not have started worse for Ammanford as just two minutes in the away side smashed in the opener after the hosts failed to clear their lines.

Just a minute later, it was almost 2-0 as an effort was blocked in the box.

On 27 minutes, Luke Fayres lost the ball in his own half but James Kirkwood denied the away side in a one-on-one opportunity.

Ammanford failed to threaten in the opening half and they were even more on the backfoot going into the interval as Pontypridd exquisitely curled a free-kick from the left hand touchline from 20 yards into the top corner on 42 minutes.

Early into the second half, some of the visiting players thought they had extended their lead when a shot from range bounced out of Kirkwood’s arms and over the bar.

On 65 minutes, the hosts were reduced to ten when Fayres was dismissed for a second yellow and they were made to pay.

Ten minutes later the league’s eighth-placed side capitalised on the one-man advantage by breaking through the defence and chipping over Kirkwood to make it 3-0.

Mikey Morris made a darting run and latched onto a lobbed through ball, but could only fire over the bar with five minutes remaining and the visitors almost had a fourth when a header bounced over Kirkwood but over the bar.

It mattered for little however as they secured a 3-0 win to dent Ammanford’s hopes of holding onto second place, with the door open for rivals Cwmamman to overtake them.
