Ammanford 1 Bridgend Street 1

Ammanford captain Rhys Owen smashed home an injury time equaliser to salvage a point in the 1-1 draw with Bridgend Street at the Rec on Saturday, as the hosts lost ground on leaders Llanelli, writes Nick Davies

After last week’s injury time winner at Bettws, Ammanford would have hoped for an easier game this time round, they got anything but.

The hosts had the lion’s share of possession in the opening period, but failed to capitalise.

Thirteen minutes in, Mikey Morris caused trouble on the wing when he crossed into a good area, but Ashley Richards couldn’t get on the end of the delivery.

Richards did come close two minutes later, but the striker fired wide after Ben Soal’s quick free-kick.

The home side maintained their impetus going forward, but a Mathew Fisher shot from the edge of area after a short corner deflected off an opposing player for another set-piece and was the next best effort they had before the break.

After the interval, it was the visitors’ turn to press a claim for all three points.

Showing early attacking intent, they broke the deadlock on 63 minutes as Jamie Rano’s indecisiveness and Matthew Jones’ failure to clear his lines resulted in the away side heading themselves in front.

Rano was to thank for keeping his side in the game however, as on 75 minutes he denied Street a second goal when he saved one-on-one.

The visitors continued to search for the goal that would pull them clear and they nearly had it with five minutes remaining, but Rano brilliantly dived to tip their effort onto the bar.

After essentially playing 40 minutes on the back foot, Ammanford began to knock on the door and their saviour came from the unlikeliest hero, with centre-half Owen smashing home from 15 yards to hand his side a vital point.
