Division Two West Central

Glyncorrwg 12 Cwmgors 13

Cwmgors earned successive league victories, following up their excellent win over Neath Athletic last weekend with a nail-biting single-point victory over second from bottom Glyncorrwg.

The result seals the Cherries’ safety in Division Two West Central for another season while condemning their hosts to the drop.

As in every match in the tough division, the fixture proved a very competitive affair;

Cwmgors made the better start, and were soon ahead after a neat inside pass from Richard Gregg helped put centre Gareth Amos in for the opening try. Steff Rees added the conversion, and his penalty success gave the visitors a 10-0 half-time advantage.

Were it not for a few dropped passes here and there, Cwm would have been further ahead going into the break, but the proverbial game of two halves, the hosts battled back in the second half.

A second Rees penalty stretched the visitors’ lead to 13-0, but, after kicking a penalty of their own to open their account, the home side hit their stride and were able to pierce a stubborn defence twice to reduce the arrears to just a single point.

With plenty of time left, Glyn went for the win, their pack driving well, but finding a brick-wall Cherries back-line unwilling to yield further.

Cwm’s second half cause wasn’t helped by the loss of second row Liam Jones to a hand injury, but they held out for a four-point win, just about deserving the victory.

Cwmgors still have three matches left to play - all at home - starting with the visit of Resolven on Saturday.
